Albright LIFE Lycoming has been awarded a $500 grant from the River Valley Senior Providers Group, a non-profit organization working to provide services to seniors. The grant will be used to purchase animated/sensory pets for participant centered activities at the LIFE Center, located in Williamsport.
Animated pets have been proven to offer comfort and stress relief to participants diagnosed with anxiety or dementia. The grant allows Albright LIFE Lycoming to expand programming to better meet the needs of participants, with a person-centered care focus. By introducing these sensory aids, Albright can increase a person’s sensory, cognitive and socialization skills at the LIFE Center.
Sensory or animated pets react to touch with movements and sounds. Studies show the robotic pets are soothing and calming for those with anxiety. The pets can lower blood pressure and cortisol levels, which is a stress hormone. Studies have shown that elders who suffer from dementia have a higher risk of developing depression which can affect their quality of life. Pet robots can make a difference in the lives of those participants.
Animated pets also can give a participant a sense of purpose. Many people interact with the robots as if they were real pets. The biggest appeal is to those who once had pets of their own. The Interdisciplinary Team, or IDT, will identify individuals that would benefit from this pilot program. The team is comprised of physicians, nurses, therapists, social workers, nursing assistants and dieticians. Outcomes of the program will be monitored by the IDT.
